Trait Info:

Tails count as one trait overall. You may use any tail features from the same or lower rarity.
Using any feature of a higher rarity determines the overall rarity of the tail.  For example, If your tail is common but with rare length, the overall rarity of the tail is rare.
This means that you would just need one rare trait applicator for your entire tail design!
