With the workday done, it was finally time to relax and enjoy the fruit of a day's labor.
Chili and another small group had spent most of their day marking the location of dewdapple plants that, hopefully, would fruit sometime later in the rainy season. It had been important work and they found quite a few; a boon for the future. But now it was time to relax and enjoy good company.
And, even more importantly, enjoy a good meal.
They could really use that.
Once back with the larger group they found those who had been gathering eucalyptus and rock fruit- the gathering task they had attempted to join earlier. While not the best cook Chili knew there was one dish they could manage.
And well, to be fair...
They were a little tired; scouring the larger expanse of Veld had been quite a bit of work! They could take it easy on their contribution to the impending feast that marked the end of a long day. After collecting some ingredients they moved over to a different location; a place that held tools, spices, bowls, and all manner of things one could use to create something new and filling.
After collecting an armful of extra tools and ingredients they began work on making a nice side. Leaves and berries, peppers for an extra kick; even some shaved bark for something just a little extra. It wouldn't be much more than a salad but it would be a good one.
With ingredients readied (and maybe a little input from more experienced chefs), Chili began to put their dish together in a large bowl. Crisp leaves mixed in with fresh berries, ginger scattered throughout, and even a nice olive oil for punch and flavor. Edible flowers for color and flair, because everyone knows you eat with your eyes too! Once everything was put together in both a delicious and pleasant way they were ready to join the rest.
And they were right on time; others had already begun placing dishes upon picnic tables and blankets, some roos already serving meals to weary but wise elders or trying to wrangle rowdy youngsters to sit and enjoy the feast.
Once they set up their contribution they were sure to dig in.
